My laptop will not let me log in on the start up my profile pic appears on screen i select it & then type in my password, it looks as though its loading & then the following error message says: The User Profile service failed the logon User profile cannot be loaded. i have never changed my password since initially getting our desktop pc in 2006 & used the same password when we bought the laptop. i'm not stuck as i have an ipad for most internet needs & also the desktop but i have lots of pics of my family, our holidays etc & a lot of documents under the profile on my laptop so have lost them all if i cannot get into my profile.

Right, first of all I must tell you that I'm not an expert like some of the folk here dinamic22 but one thing that I can tell you for sure is that you haven't lost the files stored on your laptop. There are all sorts of techy things that IT techs can do to retrieve files, so whatever else has gone wrong, rest assured that the files are safe on your hard drive until such time as someone with more knowledge than I tells you how to get to them.

Silly question but have you restarted it and tried again to log in? If that doesn't work, Microsoft have a step by step guide to fix it support.microsoft.com/kb/947215. And if that doesn't work you can still retrieve files from the harddrive by plugging the hard drive into your desktop. If it doesn't work and you do have to plug it into your desktop I can give you a step by step on how to do it if you need help =)

It could be anything from a simple issue such as an anti virus scan is running at the same time as you are trying to log on, to the profile itself being corrupt from a virus, or even just the hard drive starting to conk out. How long have you had the laptop?

Sounds like the file which stores the passwords has become corrupt. It can happen for a few reasons... 1. Hard drive failure. .. if the laptop has been dropped or is old this could be the case. 2. Virus / Malware / Spyware... with out you knowing it, you could have been infected and it's mushed if the password file. 3. Accidental deletion. This can happen with tune up / speed up programs which are not functioning correctly or if a virus has been detected within the password file or if you are going round 'cleaning' out old files.
Way to fix it...
Now this is hard, I think I failed last time it happened to me and I lost my profile but no harm in trying.
Turn the laptop on, and before the windows loading bar comes up, hold down eother f8 or f5. This will give you a list of things to try. One of them is called start windows in safe mode with networking. Select that.
Once loaded, use the administrator account.
Once that has loaded, if you have system restore turned on, it may give you the option to use system restore to go back to a time you know it still worked. Try that 1st.
If it's still not working, do the same again but say no to the system restore prompt.
Go onto the internet and google windows (insert version) password recovery. And download any free program from cnet which gets a good review.
If that fails, it gets tricky so I won't put it until you tell me if the above worked or not.
Also... have you checked if caps lock or num lock is on? That has thrown me on a number of occasions... simple yet so easy to forget about lol.

Thanks @chillervapes the laptop is approx 3 years old & has never been dropped, its only my profile that won't log in my hubbys is fine i logged in to his yesterday to try resetting my password so that i could get into the profile. I do defragment & clean up old files now & then but have not done it for a couple of months & i was logged on to my laptop about 8 - 10 days ago with no probs. Yes i have checked caps & number locks so its not that causing my problem. I will try your suggestion & get back to you & thank you

Glad it's working again! If you don't already have it, download tuneup utilities. It's free to try and is an amazing program to keep your pc working at it's best well worth buying as it will do all the hard work for you.
