This has just occured due to having a 'compost'/'waste food' bin in the kitchen courtesy of the council.. Little blighters not going into vinegar traps ...do I need more lemon juice in with the apple cider vinegar? Bigger holes in the cling film? Different washing up liquid? Any ideas most welcome. Already bought 3 bottles of bleach for the drains JAne

Electric fly killer, cost about £10 but last ages (as in years). Got one ages ago and seldom have any flys about.

Just empty the bin more often and make sure it's completely shut to flies.

I used to work in restaurants so I know they work and as you say you don't have to spray anything about. More advanced ones also send out ultrasonic waves that attract the flys that way too but they cost a heck of a lot more.
You will need to clean it out once in a while though, but most come with the brush needed (just remember to unplug it of course). Oh and you will jump the first few times a larger flying beastie hits it as they make quite a pop when they go.

Thanks for your help vereybowring. I know you suffer similar to me so you'll appreciate the problem...and I just don't have lids for my bins ...I have one poly bag on hooks on a door cupboard and a tea bag bin and that's about it! Jane

I've been putting veggies in small compost bags down the shoot straight away after meals and like putting bleach down drains regularly and am now blitzing the kitchen. Getting rid of the old sponge scourer has made such a difference!!! No more fruit flies since then! Still have vinegar traps to be on the safe side but think I need to change the sponge once or twice a day (they're cheap enough ) and patiently wait for fly zapper... So happy to have made progress. They are all gone out of the bathroom since putting kill everything bleach down the loo sabbath evening and keeping the toilet lid closed

Zapper on it's way .....still a few but got cider vinegar from supermarket this pm and feel I'm on top of it. 2 flies in the trap in the bathroom. Sounds sad but I get excited about this sort of thing LOL How often should I change the traps? Once a day or less often? JAne
