I shot a wee video in a moment of madness to show some friends how i twist wire for coils. It also explains (hopefully) why we usually flame wire. This explanation also applies to mesh although we are also looking to build an oxidized layer on the mesh to help reduce hotspots and shorting as, i think i am right in saying, the oxide layer acts as an insulator between the wire/ribbon & the wick.

Another reason that I heat mesh and wire is to burn off any impurities that could be left over from manufacture (Or left on our kitchen table after the kids have had dinner). It's also good for tidying up any frayed edges you can get on the edge of mesh after it has been cut. Also I like using the blowtorch when rebuilding as it makes me feel a bit more like a mad scientist

The person whos getting "soot" from oxidising there mesh is doing it in a yellow flame where it should be blue from a blowtorch.
The darkening of juice occurs because of the sugars in the liquid darken and run back down the wick into the tank, you'll notice this effect more with heavy VG and sweet mixes.
