What is the reason to heat the mesh when making wicks, either before or after coiling them? I realise it will anodise the metal but what does anodising achieve? I did read a post where someone said they didn't bother. I have the kit but haven't tried to make a wick yet.

I'm sure someone more qualified will answer.. But when i briefly considered making my own, i seem to recall being told it makes it easier to wrap. A little less "springy." Then again I could be wrong lol

There are plenty on here who do make their own coils.. I'm sure someone will confirm shortly.

Actually you are building a layer of iron oxide (rust) & chromium oxide to make the wick as non-conductive as possible and rigid at the same time. Else you will get shorts and might end up ruining your mod. SS is a bad conductor to begin with anyway which is why the pulse method also works where there is localised build up behind the coils. As you burn juice, you have additional layer of carbon depositing which insulates the wick further.
It's definitely not anodising as that is more common to Aluminium and rarely a few other metals but almost never Stainless Steel.

I was busy typing a long response and that bugga macca nailed it in a few lines

I don't bother, I find it mostly just covers in in soot, which will then turn your Juice black and spoils the flavour, particularly with light fruit flavours.

Lol..How you doing Blakey.. So little free time these days mate.. I'm doing good mate ta, will we be seeing you on the 7th on our little vaping boat? I think we all have to blow our vapour up the funnel to make it look like the engines are running- good for publicity . How's things with you despite the busyness?

I am tied up every three Saturdays out of four, so unfortunately can't do 7th. I would love to come to the meets but they always seem to fall on a Saturday when I can't make it. Very busy at work, so it's all work and no play at the mo. Hopefully it should improve in 2014. I do meet with chrisjw on occasion when he drops in, but that's about it.

Forgive me for butting in gents . . . but it's good to see you about on the forum Macca, you are missed. Hope you do manage to get a bit more free time in 2014.

Likewise senorita..I have my little toddler three Saturdays & Sundays out of four and I have changed jobs so on 5 day a week. So very little rest or spare time.
I browse occasionally but not for very long. When I get some spare time, I am usually catching up on all the vaping news and the veritable attack of the clones.

It's gone clone mad since those heady days of your wonderful GB's Macca . . . though I still remember with fondness the fun we had doing them. All that lovely shopping. At least you're tied up for the best of reasons on a weekend with your little one. * Apologies yesitsme for going off topic on your thread. *

Indeed. I had a lot of fun organizing them to while away those night shifts talking to the Chinese.. I haven't bought anything Vaping related since February except for some nicbase that Chris organised.. I am trying to take stock and get rid of surplus vaping stuff lying around the house as it's gradually getting filled with toys..

And I've spent less than £80 in four months on vaping related purchases Macca. We're losing our grip.
