Hi Pepperty, there is a Dolan on Inishmore Island in County Galway but Dolan is a good Irish name! Hmm yes I know - but WHICH bit of Ireland am I from? ROFL3I'm settling for Anthrim ( on border) just 'cos I know that Gramps/Granny left 'cos of 'The Troubles?!?' ..not much help eh? Aye, and "the troubles" are still smouldering away, just under the surface. We were quite shocked the last time we were there. A wonderful country full of terrific people. If only they didn't have such long memories and short fuses.

the really ODD part of it is: once everyone got to Liverpool....everything merged?? my catholic grandpa married a protestant grandma... my aunties/uncles are all half / and half! My bro married a good catholic Irish stock lass, my nieces are catholic, my kids are heathens - not christened or baptised but primary raised catholic education ... Its all rather laid back on the religion front here

The last time we were in Northern Ireland "grand-daddy hunting", we camped with a group of fellow campers from another online forum I'm in. Round the campfire the conversation turned to the communities we lived in. I explained that we live in a row of 3 terrace houses that back onto another similar row and the 6 families sort of know one another as we have all lived there for years. When I was asked what religion they were, I said I didn't know and I don't. My fellow campers simply could not comprehend this. The look on their faces was a picture. Everything from dropping jaws to totally blank.
Everywhere we went, garages for fuel, food shops, campsites to stay the night, we were invariably asked why we were touring N.I. and when I said it was to trace our ancestors, the immediate question we got was what school did they attend. IE, Catholic or Protestant. Digging, digging, digging.
I suppose if I had been brought up there, I would be the same, but I am helluva glad I wasn't. A lovely place to visit, but!!!!

must say, I find 'religion an odd topic' as in Merseyside its all so amalgamated, we ask football club allegiance before religion! AND NO, YOU CANT TELL FAITH from football club around here Going back a generation or so, football clubs were sectarian, but not now! I was always told - when in Ireland, if anyone asked your religion...stamp feet on floor and announce ;'I'm screaming atheist/pagan/wican' <<problem sorted >>

I'm the same Pepperty. I canny stand all that nonsense. I had been 18 months off the fags when we went over there the last time and I got so worked up by the continual digging that I either cancelled our month long booked holiday and got on the next boat home, or I bought some fags to calm myself down. Fortunately the fags worked and we stayed the full month. Tonight I have been sent 76 A4 pages of my Family Tree stuff from the USA. Guess what I will be doing on Christmas Day!!!!

Well since I last wrote on here about the Family Tree stuff, I have been in contact with several families in the USA whose ancestors not only come from Scotland, but are relations of mine that I did not know I had. I now have access to their Family Trees and from these I have been able to fill in dates and names that had previously eluded me. I have also pushed the Family Tree back from 1829 to 1754. That is only 8 years after the Battle of Culloden. The 558 members of my Tree have now grown to 602 and I have even been able to access Shipping Lists for some of my ancestors who sailed to America back in the 1920's. Indeed I could have added several hundred names, but I am keeping our tree strictly to only the brothers and sisters of my ancestors and not who they married or had offspring. I have printed out some of the parts of the tree just for research, but I will need to save up for some ink before I attempt to print out the whole tree as it will be 26 X A4 pages wide. Unfortunately my vaping consumption has risen almost the some amount as my new family members!!!
