Jemima - The Solution is VERY Purple as you say and contains a Gold Solution - Usually a mixture of Gold Chloride and Potassium Ferrocyanide (I beleive but I'm no Chemistry expert!) - the action of the electric current through the liquid deposits metallic gold on the surface of the item being plated!
But you can only plate other Metals and anything with Aluminium in it is VERY difficult to do....
