There are various pitfalls I encountered when starting my recoiling journey which were frustrating at the time but now I completely understand what was going wrong and why the coil didn't work as a result.
1) winding the wraps too widely - this meant that the coil wouldn't fit inside the atomiser body and touched the sides, causing a short.
2) winding the wraps too closely - this obviously causes a short too. Either the coil won't register at all on my Vamo (9.9), or the first time you put some power through it there is a bit flash and pop, followed by a very electrical smell. Thank goodness the Vamo has all that protection built in!
3) using nail clippers to trim the tail ends after reassembling the atomiser - this caused a short. Remedy = whilst squeezing the atomiser gently top to bottom, wiggle the wires until they break; this leaves no protrusion and therefore no short.
4) using too much wick - loads of dry hits because the wick can't feed the coil fast enough. I settled on 2mm Ekowool eventually with .2 Kanthal for the coil.
5) - winding the coil too tight - strangled the wick - see 4) I solved this by heating the Ekowool with a fag lighter and inserting a thin needle through the hollow middle to support the wick whilst I was wrapping. With needle removed, there was enough 'give' in the coil to allow the wick to do its job.
6) allowing the coil to sit too high in the body - risk of the coil touching the top pin (Protank) and a short. Solved by a gentle tug on the tails after reinserting the grommet and pin as these have a tendency to push the coil up in the body during insertion.
I'm sure there are more - if they come to me, I'll edit this post to include them.
Hope this helps all you wannabe recoilers out there, believe me there is nothing more satisfying than the first vape on a homemade coil - bleddy 'ansum!
