I have followed Roms videos to the T and thought i had cracked the vivi novas coils.I have tried the ones i have made for the nova and protanks but there is an almost toxic burning taste.I bought the wick and wire as recommended by Rom but nothing is working as it should.I am getting about 2 to 2.2 ohms which is perfect for me but the taste is horrible,it's not just a slight burning taste it is really bad.Any advice please.

It could be a few things. I always wash my hands before i coil as anything on your hands will get on the wick. Some people even boil the wick for 10-15 minutes to get rid of all the crap. Some people give the wick a quick burn. Another thing it could be is your wrapping the coil to tight so not enough juice is getting to the coil.

Nasty tastes are generally wicking problems, so the wick is burning, rather than the coil.

One thing to remember is once you have wicked your coil, try not to heat the coil until you have put some juice on the wick, because once the wick is burnt it will never lose that burnt taste.

I used them whilst waiting for vapemail of cotton balls and they work just fine. I pulled the pads apart and used the middle fluffy cotton part, not the outside pad part (if that makes sense)

Yorkshireman It may be that the rubber grommet in the base of the Protank head is being scorched and giving you the burnt taste. This can happen if the coil is too close to the rubber and can be fixed by cutting a small piece off the top of the grommet (the end that you insert into the head). If your coil is wrapped loose enough and it is wicking well then the rubber grommet might be worth investigating to see if it is scorched.

Vivi-Nova Top coil device! My suggestion would be wicking - you'll probably need to really tilt the device to ensure sufficient wicking, otherwise the cotton WILL burn. And I mean REALLY tilt, like at least horizontal or more! Do you have an EVOD or protank? This would possibly be a better place to start with cotton wicks, as they are gravity fed. (You didn't mention in the OP that you were using cotton, but following the thread, it seems that way. If you're using silica, you can possibly discount what I've said!) Re-reading the OP, it would seem it's silica? If so, I'd boil the wick (tie knots in the end first) for 10 mins or so, and Id also flame it a bit to get rid of impurities. Not used silica for a while, as I use cotton now, but seem to remember the first tank on a new wick could taste a bit rank - maybe you need to let it bed in? Hope you get sorted

Sorry fred - I was of course referring to the Protanks that the OP mentioned. I have now made that clear by editing my post. Thank you for pointing that out.

I hadn't read Protank in the OP, but it clearly says 'nova and protanks'. So I'd possibly go with the grommets! (but the one holding the wires, not the one atop the head ) Once the coil is made, Yorkshireman, (particularly for the Nova), try doubling the leg back up on itself and twisting together - this would 1/2 the resistance of the legs, and may stop burning?

That's the one I meant fred but cut a tiny bit off the top end of this, ie: the end that goes into the head. (whoever said a picture is worth a thousand words knew his stuff LOL) You raise a good point about doubling the legs to lower the resistance - it's been a while since I had to recoil a clearo head and I am wondering do the originals come with non-resistance legs as this would explain why the oringinal heads never gave a burnt taste.
