For a couple of months now, my little dogs breath is vile! It's so bad, I can't have her too close to me as it makes me feel ill! Mr Dolly got something from pets at home store, but it was useless. Can't remember the name of it though. She has had those denta stix things that are supposed to clean her teeth, but she rarely touches them. We have given her proper bones with no joy either.
I am starting to worry about it as we will need to try to rehome her when I move, and who wants a stinky dog?!! Anyone out there had success in treating dog breath? What worked?

I was hoping to avoid the extortionate vet fees, but, if you say it was the only thing that worked, I may just have to do it regardless. Moving home already costs a lot of money, but at the end of the day, I am gonna have to make sure she gets homed. It's going to be hard enough to rehome a 12yr old dog, let alone a stinky one!

Vets fees are rediculous but yes is was the only one thing that worked with our dog. Its a shame you are going to have to rehome him they become part of the family

You can buy dog toothbrushes and toothpaste dolly - would your dog let you do it do you think ? That would save vets costs.

I've been looking at her on and off all morning and welling up inside. She has been around the world with us. When I was missing family, she was like my missing "child" . I have even toyed with the idea that it would be kinder to her to have her put to sleep as she is so close to us, even if we go away for a couple of days, she refuses to eat any food. I just don't know what to do for the best.

I was going to suggest a visit to the vets to have her teeth checked as smelly breath is usually caused by something wrong with the teeth, hopefully a good clean will do the trick.

My lab had very smelly breath, it started very suddenly and we tried all the teeth cleaning etc to no avail. It was vile, really, really rank!Turned out he had developed a bacterial infection in the folds of skin by his mouth (lip-fold dermatitis) - I'd never even heard of it - quick blast of antibiotic cream and it was quickly sorted and just needed cleaning afterwards from time to time. I hope it is something as simple as that. Have a look if she will let you, I think you'll know if it is that by the smell when you are looking, if you think it might be, clean the area with some warm water with a few drops of tea tree oil in, and see if it helps - fingers crossed!

Thanks for that Sal. I will get Mr Dolly to have a look when he comes home as I can't bend down. I hope it is something as simple as your dog had. It really is so bad that I can smell it when I am literally 6ft away from her. It's disgusting. Seems to have got much worse in the last week.

I'd agree - best plan is to get the vet to have a look. Unfortunately one of our dogs had to have teeth out (twice!) as well as a clean and treatment with antibiotics. It is expensive though as they have to have a full anesthetic, so you are looking at about £150 plus a bit more if there are any extractions needed. The other bummer is that insurance doesn't cover work on teeth. It had to be done though as the last time his gums were badly infected and some of his teeth were practically falling out. Poor soul has now had all 24 back teeth out, but he seems to be coping pretty well.

I hope so too, it was so bad with my boy I couldn't even bear to have him in the car with me! Poor boy, but it was so easily sorted and I have mentioned it to a few other people since who've found their dogs have it too. My current dog who is the son of the one who had the original problem is also a bit prone to it but keeping the area clean keeps it in check. You dog does sound very similar to how it was with mine.
