12:10: After months of debate and arguments, MEPs are now preparing to vote on the tobacco products directive.

12:11: Conservative group leader Martin Callanan welcomes the last-minute decision from the Parliament President to allow for split and separate votes on individual articles. This revolves primarily around article 18A which deals with the regulation of e-cigarettes, a move opposed by a number of MEPs.

12:14: The last-minute decision to allow for separate votes on certain paragraphs appears to be causing confusion. Vice-president Karas clarifies that MEPs will vote on the text as a whole and then on three individual articles.

12:16: Two Northern Ireland MEPs - the Ulster Unionist James Nicholson and the Democratic Unionist's Diane Dodds ask for a roll call vote on the separate parts, but Vice-President Karas says the deadline has been missed. Mr Nicholson says this is because of the last-minute decision to allow separate votes.

12:16: And so after months of debate, MEPs approve the revised tobacco products directive by 514 votes to 66.

12:17: The article requiring tougher regulation of e-cigarettes is backed by 478 votes to 130.

12:18: Linda McAvan, the British MEP who steered negotiations of the directive through parliament receives applause from fellow MEPs as the result is read out.

Just realised it took a whole 8 minutes for the vote to go through. 8 minutes to destroy the e-cig as we know it

They're talking about legal action on another forum if just 1 member state implements the directive on e-cigs.
