I recently took delivery of my first mechanical mod, a small 14xxx size and have been researching the choice of batteries (lack of!) and general safety when using a mechanical mod. There are loads of rabbit holes to disappear down on the web, plus much misinformation, but this is what I have deduced.
My preference would be to use a protected battery, but they are few and far between in this size, plus, it seems that the maximum discharge current of around 1.5amp for a protected battery of this size falls below that required for the 1.5-1.6ohm coil I intend to use. 1.6ohm at 4.2v = 2.6amp. At a nominal 3.7v it is still 2.3amp, however this is well within a high drain IMR batteries safe limit.
To give added safety when using an unprotected battery in a mechanical mod, the use of a kick or fuse is recommended; neither of these is available in this size.
Of the reputable makes I have found these three batteries:
14500 AW IMR 600mAh Efest IMR 700mAh 14650 Efest IMR 950mAh
I know there is no such thing a 100% safe battery, but at the moment I feel happy to use any of those three but will: Build coils no less than 1.5ohm. Check the resistance and for shorts before use. Use a quality charger. (I have a Pila) Be aware of over discharge and physical battery condition.
So am I correct in my assumption that there is no point in using a protected battery of this size?
Is my confidence in the three batteries mentioned misplaced?
Are there any others that can be recommended?
Many thank, Chris.

The efest 14650 950mah has a 10C maximum discharge rate so should be good for 9.5 amps, the efest 14500 700mah has a maximum discharge rate of 8C so is good for 5.6 amps. The aw 14500 600mah has a maximum discharge rate of 8C so is good for 4.8 amp.
Maximum amps for your battery is (mah/1000) multiplied by its C rating. All 3 will be well inside their limit at 1.5 ohm

That's brilliant, thank you for your prompt replies and reassuring me I'm on the right lines. I splashed out on a Nemi in mixed matte and am more than pleased with it, albeit still waiting for a couple of the Efest 14650 batteries to arrive. It's as pretty as a picture and beautifully built, I'll be using a Spheroid on it and that pair looks great. I also have a Kayfun V2.1. Was waiting to see what the new Piccolo was like but don't have buyers remorse The tankometer looks like another good investment, cheers for that and thank you all again, Chris.
