Silica in a kayfun (pic heavy)

Yesterday another member was having trouble with their kayfun so I thought I would make a small guide to show how I do mine.  
I am not saying this is the best way, just that it works for me.

First off start with a freshly cleaned taken apart kayfun and building stuff.  Wick of the day is 2mm silica wrapped with 0.25 kanthal.




next I fold the silica so I will have 3 strands going through the coil








then using a pin to help strengthen the silica and make wrapping the coil easier I wrapped 5 turns around the wick ending up with




place the coil on the build deck and fix it down once you have your coil in place




Adjust the size of the loops so they are just big enough to touch the base of the build deck.  You don't want them too short and you don't want them to be longer than needed either




trim the single strands of silica right back to the ends of your coil





next check your resistance is ok




assemble the kayfun








then add a little bit of juice to your wicks and test it to make sure it works




fill your kayfun but don't overfill




stick it on a mod, wait a couple of minutes for the wicks to start working properly and vape on




this is what works for me.  No dry hits, no flooding.  Just good vapour and great flavour to go with it.  Hope this helps somebody

Nice one Buddy thanks, I have a Kayfun tell me do you leave a gap between the coils and the top of the base, Like poke a cocktail stick between them ? Cheers.

Yes leave a small gap.  I just fix it to the deck fairly tightly and pull it up a bit.  Probably just about a millimetre or so

Just been playing with mine again. Got a micro coil of 1.4ohms made of 10 wraps .32 kanthal threaded on to a single 2mm silica wick unravelled wick slightly then cut to size. Pushed wick vertical and screwed on chamber, lightly prodded down wick onto the juice channels and saturated the wick with juice. Quick test fire to make sure of no shorts then screwed rest together and filled.
With the single wick im getting plenty of airflow over the coil and no problems with wicking so far.

When i did mine i kept getting a short and for the life of me i could not work out why as the coil was off the deck. Turns out when i snipped the wire on the posts a tiny little bit was sticking out and had been touching the centre screw on part of the chimney.

Good pics wish i`d seen this before i did mine lol

Well, I thought it was good. 0.6 with bare bones but assembled kayfun, filled it and now 2.5 ???
Its capable and its what I'm used to but .... Reckon loops may be too big!

You also may have a wire end touching and causing a partial short somewhere. When you take it apart, before you disassemble the whole shooting match, just check that where you snipped or wiggled the tail after fixing it under the screw, the wire isn't bent outwards a bit and touching the inside of the larger chimney section when it's screwed onto the deck. Alternatively, the same snipped/wiggled tail end may be touching the coil, or the coil may not be high enough off the centre of the deck where the air hole is located, and there is a partial short there too.
It's most frustrating when you have something built which has potential to become great, only to find that it underperforms like this.
Once you discover the reason, you'll never do it again!!

Also make sure he screws that hold your coil in place are tight enough. A few times I've had a higher resistance than expected and all it needed was tightened up a bit.  The size of loops of silica won't affect resistance but it might affect wicking.  Just don't pack it into the channels and it should be fine
