Just ordered my first mechanical mod, do I need IMR batteries or the protected type? Just a good high drain battery like the sony vtc4 I never use protected batteries in my mech mod.

I also wouldn't use protected. Choose a IMR or Hybrid, just make sure it's capable and rated to generate the current required by your coil.
