I've only been using cartomizers this far. Lately, however, I've been thinking about trying my hand on some mixing, and have come to the conclusion that atomizers are much better when it comes to trying out smaller amounts of mixes.
There is just one thing I can't figure out about atomizers, and it's so rudimentary that I almost feel embarrassed asking about it: If I buy a pack of “standard” 510 atomizers, do I need cartridges to go with them? On pictures, I think that the atomizers look totally “self contained”, but things I’ve read suggest otherwise.

Ebal, yes you need cartridges. There is a cartridge on the atomizer, but it is hollow, there is no filling in it.

Ebal, please don't ever feel embarrassed asking any questions As Jerry says, most atomisers come with a a blank mouthpiece (cartridge attached) you can stuff it with something like blue foam & then fill it with juice. Either that, or you can buy a drip tip & use that as a mouthpiece & just directly drip juice via it into the atomiser. If anything I've said doesn't make sense, please come back & ask for clarification

for testing out small amounts of mixes the best way is to direct drip into the atomiser... as Jerry and Chrissie have said the atomisers come with a blank cartridge but you would be better off replacing that with a drip top. then just drop 3 drops of your mix down the drip tip and this will be enough for 4 of 5 good draws. then repeat
the great thing about direct dripping is you can try different flavours with the minimal amount of cross contamination of flavours

Ebal depending on where you buy from some come with carts with the white padding (polyfill) filling already in them however 99% don't so it's a good idea to order some as well and perhaps a small suggestion as Chrissie said a drip tip so you can drip directly onto the atomizer as well .
