Sounds like the coil is shorting out on the metal that surrounds it in the head. If the coil touches the metal you can get a low reading or sometimes you can get a high reading.

Make sure the legs don't touch the metal before they get to the grommet.

You can try tweaking the coil with tweezers or a micro screwdriver while its on the device to see if it changes as you tweak it.

I use a set of electronic screwdrivers to coil different diameters and I get to use them on my atty screws ect. £2 from wilco's

sharkeyfinn - if you do as hijack says and tweak the coil once it's in the device, make sure the power isn't on before you tweak, otherwise you really will have to pop in a new coil!!
