coils?

hi everyone, i thought i would have a go at doing a coil build on my pro tank 2. so i have some questions. firstly how do you determine the resistance, is it by the thickness of the wire? or the amount of turns, ie 6,12,etc. and why does having lower resistance make for a better vape? i bought an iclear 30b a while back which only had a single 1.6 coil in it, so,thinking this wasnt right, i ordered some proper twin coil 2.0 . i quite liked the 30b when it had the 1.6 in it, but its rubbish with the 2.0 coils, and im curious why this is. thanks for your time guys ;-)

The lower the coil resistance the greater the heat generated and more vapour produced generally.

Resistance is due to the length of wire used, less wraps of the same diameter use less wire so has a lower resistance. But different thickness of wire have different resistance - 0.2mm diameter kanthal has a higher resistance than 0.3mm wire. A length of thick wire is always lower resistance than the same length of thinner wire. Thicker wire with a low resistance gets much hotter than thiner wire with a higher resistance and tends to give a hotter vape with denser clouds, and high resistance with a cooler temperature tends to produce less clouds. For the best flavour I find it depends what device you are using as to what is the best resistance, e.g. my kayfun is really nice at about 1.3 ohm and my ithaka works best at 0.8. To say lower resistance or higher gives a better vape is all down to personal preference though. Its a bit like being hungry and having to choose whether an apple or an onion is the best thing to eat. Both are good but both have their right place.

The power you put through the coil also has an effect but to reiterate what erik514 has said: The basics are: Thick wire = low resistance Thin wire = high resistance You need more length of thick wire, more wraps, for a given resistance than thin wire Thin wire heats and cools quicker than thick. You also need to factor in the power put through the coil. You only find the sweet spot for you by trail and error; there are no rights and wrongs.

C'mon, make with the video - you know you want to!

Think of it like a lucky opportunity to broaden your experience and report back when you have an answer and we can see if we came to the same conclusions

Just wanted to add please make sure to get a device to check your coils before use eg multi meter, ohm checker or use a vv/vw mod like a vamo which will check the resistance

hi guys, thanks for the replies, although sadly i have a new problem :-( i have bought some 28 awg kanthal (as used by rip trippers for a protank 2 build) i have tried 12 wraps 11 wraps, 6 wraps and probably everything in between , and i either get a reading from my mvp v2 of 0.5 or 0.0 . what am i doing wrong? and thats happening with 2 different types of wire too, a 25 and 45(i think as the girl in the shop didnt label them ..DOH! :-) i appreciate the 0.0 is probably a short? maybe,as the bigger wraps seem to be a bit big, but the 0.5 suggests a reading . i have also used different wrapping implements, such as a cotton bud shaft and an ink cartridge syringe needle. ant ideas would be great thanks guys ;-)

Yep could well be this, there's not much clearance in a protank 2 for the coil legs. If your snipping the legs off try wiggling them instead under slight tension. You can't beat a little wiggle

Wiggling the tails off after re-inserting the grommet and bottom pin solved 95% of my problems. I used to snip them off with nail clippers, but there was obviously sufficient wire still remaining to short out. Wiggling is the way to go! make sure the tails are kept under slight tension as you rebuild, and tug them down slightly after adding the grommet, and again after popping that bottom pin in; if the tails bend inside the assembly, they may touch the inner walls and short. Also make sure that the coil isn't touching the sides in the top - if you can, use a thick darning needle to keep the coil in the right place while rebuilding. You don't state whether you are building silical/Ekowool coils or microcoils, but if using silica wrap around a thin needle to give some rigidity to the wraps, and also to allow the silica to breathe a bit once the needle is removed. It's all trial and error - I built around 10 Vivi Nova coils before getting one which worked, but now knock them out in a couple of minutes. Keep asking - it's the way to learn and we've all been there once
