A flurry of reports about the ending of the paper tax discs from October, and now relying on police cameras checking the number plates and cross referencing with the DVLA database. They claim it will save money and increase security.
Now I know I've lost some 'grey cells' in the last few years, but what is to stop a 'naughty' person from stealing a car, finding a similar model, colour etc by seeing one anywhere... jotting down the registration number and getting a set of plates made for a few quid. All will come up legit, won't it... or am I missing something ???

Nope. You are missing nothing.
However, getting plates made up is much harder these days. I suspect the type of people who would even consider such a risky strategy probably don't buy car tax anyway.
I guess the new system saves enough money to allow "leakage" of revenue. ???
To be honest, the whole thing is flogging a dead horse. Plenty of people have no insurance because it's cheaper to skip it and get fined £100 in court which gets reduced to 5p a week if you can't afford the fine.

It's a ball ache if you sell a car too as no longer does it matter that you sell a car with say 9 months tax as it's void as the new buyer has to tax it himself.....so best buy/sell a car with long mot

Would this mess up our rights to claim a refund on a sold car? I'm a little behind on all this

The thing I noticed about it was you are no longer allowed to leave the tax on the car if you sell it, you must remove it and inform the DVLA who will refund you UNUSED FULL MONTHS only. Failure to do so results in a hefty fine. The person buying your car must then apply for their own tax disc, to run from the first of the month it is purchased in. Now, does this not mean that they could be getting paid more than once for the same period of time the tax runs. ie, worst case you sell the car in the middle of the month, losing the refund for the rest of that month. Person buying your car gets tax from the first of the month therefore losing half a months tax straight away.

Mine runs out end of sept. Does this mean I can go straight onto direct debit? I'm finding it confusing

Mine is end of Oct and I'm waiting to see the surcharge on the monthly option. From some reports it could be cheaper than the current 6 month option. We shall see.

I heard this was coming in but didn't know when so thanks Raffles for reminding me.
I just read up on this and the surcharge will be 5% instead of the normal 10% they charge for 6 months at the P.O.
Not sure what the monthly surcharges will be but does help those that struggle financially

What I would like to know is how do people with a low emission car with zero tax go about it?
