Hello all
Right so i work in a large hardware retail shop and we tend to get quite a few drills back big brands like ryobi so not cheap stuff recently discovered as i work on returns and repairs that a certain model of drill has a battery with 5 18650 batteries in it in a series.
I have dismantled a few of these and have the batterys.
1. Are they safe 2.safe to charge with a nitecore charger 3.i think there 1300mah from the info on battery (pics to follow)
All advice will be apreciated as im not sure.
Thanks ian

Hi Ian, I've never dismantled a drill battery, but have done dozens of laptops. Did the battery pack have a recharging/safety circuit inside as well as the 5 18650s? That battery looks fine to charge. It will be unprotected so I'd only advise using it in a protected vv/vw mod or powerbank. When you try to charge it, if it's dead it just won't charge. I've never had anything else happen. Let us know how you get on and how the batteries perform.

As seniorphil said I'd use them in a regulated mod but I'd be a bit cautious in a mech and avoid it. I've got 6 of seniorphil a laptop batteries which ronaldo kindly picked up for me and they're faultless in the SVD.

That's what happens if an unprotected ICR were to short out.
And now an IMR How will a vamo stop that from happening if the battery were to be damaged and a short were to happen. If you must use an ICR over an IMR, then at least use one that has battery protection built in or one of the Panasonic NCR range that have extra passive protection. That's just my opinion.

Your Vamo won't need to protect against a short like that. The plastic shrink wrap would have to be damaged to short it. The vamo will protect against over discharge. It is possible to get any lithium battery to do this for the benefit of a youtube video, in reality if you're careful it won't happen. I've extracted hundreds of laptop batteries and only four have vented and I shorted/burnt/punctured and crushed them to see the result.

Only if the battery is physically damaged is it likely to short out inside the tube on the battery side of the electronics.
Shorts after the electronics are protected, and it is also protected against too low a discharge.
