flavourtank yes that laptop battery contains several 18650 batteries. Just take great care in opening the outer casing. Check each battery for any damage to the plastic casing, sand down the ends of battery to remove the spikes left during breakdown. Charge as normal then use mech -mod to check operation of battery. Any damage anywhere "scrap" that battery. Good hunting.

I have a load here I charge them and check that they don't get hot charging (some have), leave them for a week and check they have not dropped more than 0.25 V before using them, but I would not use in a mech without a kick as they are ICR. Fine in regulated node < 15 W as they should protect you. seniorphil & ronaldo know a lot about this subject so tagging them in case there is anything else important.

As jeffc and VapingBad say, just take care. While taking them apart a momentary short will just cause a spark, but if left shorted will vent. If you don't have a multimeter you can try charging. If they won't take a charge , bin them. If they charge real fast its likely they're near the end of there life. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

3000 mAh Samsung ICRs vary nice for a power bank or 15 W regulated mod.

would they not be suitable for going to higher watts?

flavourtank - I'm no expert on batteries, but I notice that a couple of those in the picture have damage to the plastic coating, At the very least I would pop a bit of insulation tape over the affected areas, and others may be able to advise if they should be recycled or not.
