Jeeze that was a load of replies all at once thanks guys tomj777 can't take the actual flap away or we'll get a load of mosquitos in. We've actually put the cat flap in the mozzie screen itself as we never have the patio doors closed but we always have the mozzie screens shut. Just fed up with having to get up & down all evening when our lovely little Poppet is most active. jeffc you said "they will then soon learn that flap = food & warm house" I'd have to change that sentence to "they will then soon learn that flap = food only" forget about the warm bit, it's normally hotter outside than it is inside haha. And nope I am not letting her in & out by opening the mozzie screen for her, so I have been doing the right things all day then according to what all you's have been saying. Just might take a couple of days for her to get used to it. I thought it would be easy, put her through the flap a couple of times and she'd get the hang of it how wrong could I have been. Little mare is meowing right now and staring at the flap as though its gonna jump out and attack her Pick up her paw, and push the flap open with it, then kinda nudge her through a bit, she will get the hang of it eventually

toots it's a shame you have the mozzie problem Otherwise, the best bet would be to tie the cat flap open via wrapping a piece of string round it & wrapping the other end round the door handle.

I think toots must be still sat at the side of the cat flap opening it lol. It takes time with some cats, but he/she will learn it.

Chrissie & sammy13 - at long last she is going through the cat flap, she's still a bit cautious about it and sits there for at least 10 mins before deciding to take the plunge It took her 3 whole days to make that first plunge through on her own though. I was beginning to think she'd never do it by herself Another week and I reckon she'll be running in and out of it as if it is a game to play, but at least I'm not now having to get up every 10 mins to let her in or out

Excellent news, just make sure as I am sure you will that she is not stuck outside looking stupidly at the door Nah, that wouldn't happen coz I can see through the mozzie screens if she's there, and if she was being stubborn like she has been over the training period I would hear her meowing to come in. She would make her presence known as she always has done before the flap was put in

Pop some plants or foliage at either side of the flap so she doesn't feel so exposed when she goes out. Saw that tip on the cat programme that was on the other week Now how do I stop the pup from using the cat flap

Brilliant news toots Mind you if she is anything like my lot, I still often have to let them in. They have a habit of going out the cat flap in the back door, running round to the front of the cottage & crying to be let back in at the front window
