Bob - I agree with all you say. Until there is a ban on vaping in the fresh air (God forbid!), then I really can't see why any company can enforce a ban on vaping, even if there was a law against it! I don't vape where I wouldn't have smoked, so that's the easy bit. I am also aware that my exhaust may smell offensive (as opposed to being dangerous, but only wee seem to know that bit!), so I also go to considerable lengths to ensure that I don't blow my vapour at others unnecessarily at all times. I have vaped on Redruth Train station in full view of the 'guard', or whoever the bloke who waves that little white disc on a stick at the driver is called, and he just smiled as if to say "good for you mate!" Where do we go from here? if he's on the train then he's a guard otherwise he's a dispatcher, unfortunately the railways have their own rules and regulations (by-laws) which can be enforced in a court of law, seeing as I left in 2012, I don't know if they have been updated to include vaping in the no smoking rules, on manned outdoor stations I stealth vape, until an employee tells me not to, I think it is just common sense and courtesy really - now they are talking about no smoking in parks and that is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Were you a guard Bob? I started on BR Southern as a guard in '82, made Train Crew Supervisor in '89 made redundant in '96 then back on with South West Trains as a guard in '97 and retired in 2012

I have to say that some of the e-liquids people vape smell quite nasty to my nostrils and I wouldn't be best pleased if I had to sit behind someone vaping such an item. Therefor I have to accept that the smell from my vaping may be unpleasant for others. Public transport is an enclosed environment and we really shouldn't be subjecting others to our lifestyle choice be it legal or not. Respect others as we expect to be respected ourselves. That also goes for restaurants and cafes and quite frankly- anywhere that smoking should not be permitted. Yes but on the other hand the smell of some people in close proximity on public transport is also fairly unpleasant but I don't see TfL proscribing a zero tolerance to failing to wear deodorant policy ever gaining traction. On a cold winters day people exhaling generates a fair bit of vapour too - are we to ban breathing in these circumstances because it might remind people of smoking? There is no risk from passive vapour and so there is no logic to this policy - if we are talking annoying behaviour then there's a plentiful supply of things I'd like banning first on public transport "HELLO - I'M ON THE TRAIN - NO IT'S CRAP" (obligatory trigger happy tv reference)

You may well have, I used to travel up to Leeds quite a lot, and the occasional visit to York, had a bust up with the Fat Controller at Donny one Saturday in about '92

Fat controller
I don't think smoking on the platforms was banned then, certainly wasn't on trains, but oooh you held your breath before entering the smoking carriage. It was banned for me totally whilst in uniform, but as you will know the driver was always accommodating lol

The platform/station ban came in when the ban on smoking in the workplace was introduced, Notwork Fail decided to introduce it to all stations, the only place they couldn't enforce it was track side for the pway men. We were a bit luckier in that nearly all our stock was EMU so we just went into the back cab for a fag, but then our management decided to ban that, and then came, the new wave of drivers who would report you if they smelt it when they changed ends, luckily by 2012 I had 40 years worth of Railway pension in the pot, and my SO needed care, so I took early retirement, getting 2/3rds of what I was earning and all this free time
