I have not done a mesh only wick for year or so as switched to ss rope
and I don't think the mesh grade is as important for that. I've not tried them all, I use 500, but I use 100% PG liquid and the conventional wisdom it finer mesh for thinner liquid, so I would think 400 would be sensible.
