Reminds me of that story about how the Americans spend millions developing a ball point for space that could be used upside down and in a weightless environment. The Russians used a pencil.

It is indeed a genius idea from Pepperty  ....... but the thing about the Americans developing the pen while the Russians simply used a pencil is just an urban myth.

Both the Americans and the Russians used pencils at the start, but the Americans wanted something better than a pencil since parts of the pencil could flake or break off and drift about getting into stuff that it shouldn't get into.

The Fisher company developed the 'anti gravity' pen independently.

I thought it was apocryphal - but a lovely story non-the-less
