Lol Jane, it looks like there must have been another forum glitch - I've got rid of the other 2 duplicated threads

Can you set up a dual boot @johanino
I did this with some old XP 'puters for people. They could choose to use Ubuntu (sometimes Mint) just for fast boot and easy internet access.

There's something wrong here, a mac owner running it down????? Linux isn't as easy to use as using a mac and if you're a long term mac user then you're in even more trouble, specifically because apple don't let you do anything on their operating systems, windows lets you do some things and linux lets you do everything including formatting HDD's without 10 "are you sure" boxes before it actually does it. Get it wrong with linux and it goes wrong big time! Some of the easier linux distros are Luna, Ubuntu and Red Hat. Dual boot is possibly a solution but knowing Apple, they won't let you do it?

Im sure you can get some simple distros that are built to run off a usb stick ? Though I may be imagining this lol
Its been a while since I looked at Linux for anything and even if its true they may not have that much functionality or even run on a mac

What are the specs of the mac, and what version of OS X are your running [edit: saw it was mavericks - oops sorry], there are probably some things you can do to to speed it up, like don't run firefox - use safari - or chrome I converted an old netbook into a linux box using Ubuntu - pretty simple job, and once you get used to it easy to use. Like any operating system it just takes some getting used to. www.ubuntu.comNick

I was going to try it out on virtual box first of all.
Maybe just use ubuntu on virtual box for web browsing and keep everything else?
Or run minimal mac and keep everything on virtual box - have run linux on this mac with virtual box before. No probs
I've used ubuntu and PC Linux (I think that's what it was called? KDE interface) before so I know it'll take some getting used to but I also know it's possible
And then configure my printer and my wireless router to connect with it....
Of course the prob may just be firefox LOL

I? sat here on an old version of Ubuntu on Virtual Box....with firefox
I have on my mac sophos - things seemed to have slowed down since I installed that? Could it be that?
Or do I just need a browser other than firefox?
What browser would you folk recommend?

Get rid of Sophos. It knocks around 30% of the speed off. More RAM might help too if it isn't already maxed out.

Also take b1mble advice on sophos and RAM I am pretty sure the White Mac books had replaceable RAM, you can check here at Crucial LINK

Running Ubuntu in a stick is a bit more complicated than on a windows machine - you will need to go into the terminal. Good step by step instructions here link to see if it is something you want to do.
