So long as they don't go below 1.36V when rested there's no problem. For new ones a minimum of 1.4V is acceptable. They generally have a good shelf life when stored correctly.

Cheers izan I wouldn't say they were hot as such. I could hold them without burning myself anyway. What voltage do yours come out at when finished charging and do the little lights stop blinking? The lights are "steady on" at ~1.5V. I'm a bit OCD and as soon as the LEDs stop blinking I pull them off. If they are not charging completely/evenly or are getting "too hot" (subjective), they are candidates for replacement. Have fun I

I took them out when they were showing 1.4 volts will they still show 1.36 volts or more when rested or does this only apply when they have had a full charge?

I'd expect them to drop below as they haven't completed charging. I could be wrong as I prefer to let them complete and I've never pulled them off early.
Second battery fininshed at 1.49volts. Warm, but not hot.
ETA: Thease have had probably 40 cycles. Not old, but not brand new.

Both batteries tested at 1.43volts after resting for 1 hour. I never expected anything else.

RipshodThis is what I was talking about with regard to the D2 though the same text is in the (online) manual for the D4 Its the D2 I have Taken from www.nitecore.com/UploadFile/Files/download/1-1_D2_UM_en.pdfCharging Small Capacity Batteries When charging batteries with a capacity lower than 750mAH (e.g. AAA, 10440 and 16340 batteries), a low charging current is recommended to help extend battery life. To select a low charging current, while in regular charging mode, simply press the side “SLOT” button to select a desired battery slot and then press and hold the side “MODE” button for more than 1 second until “LOW” is displayed on the LCD display indicating activation of low current charging mode. To exit, simply press and hold the side “MODE” button for more than 1 second once again o r remove and reinstall the battery.

Yeah we got that izan. sonicflowjoe's batteries should be 850mAh tho, above the recommended 750 limit (I did misquote 700). If they turn out to be 700's then, as suggested earlier, the vendor is shifting old stock. Also, using the slots as suggested by lairey on his I4 would also reduce the current, negating the need to do any manual setting

sonicflowjoeYeah we got that izan. sonicflowjoe's batteries should be 850mAh tho, above the recommended 750 limit (I did misquote 700). If they turn out to be 700's then, as suggested earlier, the vendor is shifting old stock. Also, using the slots as suggested by lairey on his I4 would also reduce the current, negating the need to do any manual setting The link for the batteries shows them as 700 mAh so I was kind of going on that, but .... On the I4, bays 1&2 and 3&4 are paired, so if you are charging 2 batteries and you put them in bays 1&3 or 2&4, they will get full charge capacity, but in bays 1&2 or 3&4, they will charge at half speed... does that make sense? This does make sense, although I had some time at work and being the kind of person I am looked up the manual online for the I4 to see what it was saying and it seems to be the opposite of what lairey is saying Taken from here www.nitecore.com/UploadFile/Files/download/1-1_i4_UM_en.pdfPrecautions 1. Nitecore strongly recommends that AAA, AAAA and 10440 Li-ion batteries are not charged alone in the i4 charger. When using only one charging slot, the i4's current automatically sets to 750mA, which exceeds the maximum current range of most AAA, AAAA and 10440 Li-ion batteries. Failing to follow to this recommendation can result in excess heat, battery damage or even explosion, causing property damage and/or personal injury. 2. Due to the aforementioned reasons, it is recommended that a minimum of two (2) AAA or 10440 rechargeable batteries are placed into the charging slots together. When charging two batteries in the i4, be sure to always place them in either slot 1 and 3 or slot 2 and 4.Am I reading it right ? Though if you are charging 4 at a time it should be all good.

I think you're right charliehorse, going on your quote. Never having had an 'i' series charger I never spotted that. So for NiCad or NiMH batteries it's either odds OR evens, unless charging 3 or more, on an I4. The D4 differs as each slot is independant. So for 2 batteries using any 2 slots you get full charge, so use of the 'low' setting is needed. I think we got there in the end.

Seem to have started a nice little discussion here... I've learnt a few new things anyway The batteries finished charging last night but I didn't take them out straight away (didn't leave them overnight) and by time I checked them they were reading 1.45 ish. Will check again when I get home today. I was quite impressed that the I4 obviously wasn't trying to carry on charging them as were cold by time I realised they had finished.

Had dropped to 1.39 by time i got home. Seems like the batteries are sound enough. They are only for a wireless wii control bar so not exactly rocket science. It does like to eat batteries though...
