It's not easy to cancel a licence. A mate of mine (a landlord) got fined for having a TV in a house that had no electricity supply, and hadn't for 4 months. So whether you have an aerial or not. Whether you have electricity or not. If the TV has a tuner in it (even if it's just analogue) it's deemed capable of receiving live TV and you have to have a licence. If you have a PC and it's linked to the net, then it's deemed capable of receiving live TV over the net, and you need a licence. Not too sure where 3G/4G smartphones would stand. Maybe one day?? Seems saying you don't watch live TV means squat - there's no way to prove it. That word 'capable' is capable of anything in law. That's not the case anymore, checkout the money saving expert link earlier

The little now TV box gets all the main free to air catchup channels Greigster. It's around £10 and you don't need a subscription for the catchup channels. I've had mine around 9 months now without any problems I also sideloaded Plex so I can stream from my PC that is in the bedroom to my TV in the living room. This was very easy took around 5 mins and works perfectly.

No aerial? Doesn't matter, small set-top aerials can be hidden in seconds. I like Martin Lewis, he gives some great advice. On this occasion however it's open to interpretation and TV Licencing and the Courts see it a different way. The law, sir, is an ass!!

I have done quite a lot of research in to having no tv licence and as long as you do not watch anything as it is being broadcast, then you do not require a licence. It is not for you to prove that you do not watch live tv but up to the authorities to prove that you do watch live tv. You can cancel your licence at any time but you will need to confirm via a disclaimer that you no longer watch live tv. Refund are given back for any full unused 3 monthly period. Oh and there was never any equipment in the back of tv detector vans......it was just a very successful advertising ploy to frighten people into buying a licence.
The bottom line is that if you decide to only watch catchup tv, you do not need a tv licence and you are not guilty of any offence.

I`ve not had a tv licence for about 6 years and have numerous interaction with the tv licence peeps, i also bought a samsung smart tv about 4 years back, first off you gotta get rid of anything that will give you tv as it`s been shown > set top boxes and aerials, then it`s just a case of phoning the tv licence peeps and telling them you don`t need a tv licence because you don`t watch tv as it`s been shown live, the only time you need to own a tv licence when your watching tv, is if watching a programme when it`s been shown and it`s then that your only creating an offence in the eyes of the law so long as your aerial and set top boxes are not plugged in, your not, owning a tv licence isn`t a law in itself, it`s an act of parliment and until you get caught defying that act your breaking no laws of the land. Now when phoning to notify the tv licence peeps and mentioning all this they will tell you they have the right to call at your house at any time to check, fair enough but they won`t tell you all > they aren`t allowed in because your breaking no laws, so if they stood on your doorstep having this chat, it`s a simple case of stopping them right in their tracks and asking if they are calling you a liar cus your doing nothing wrong and breaking no laws and have notified the tv licence peeps of your situation, don`t fall for false threats even if they threaten you with this that and the other or try blagging you to get in, just tell them to do one, they aint gotta leg to stand on, look and read up on common law if you want to know more, also another thing to mention in your phonecall is you want to remove their right of accesss for them to be allowed on your property/land and you wan`t it noting down on your file now. If you a bit namby pamby and what i call a wikkler and easy flustered when put under a little bit of pressure, a much easier way is just don`t answer the door or tell them to P-off, works everytime and always will, even if you get threat letters saying this that and the other, were taking you to court etc, they are just trying it on again taking the piss and lieing, how can they take you to court without proof of you creating and offence, in the eyes of the law, lol, they just can`t it`s impossile, even better just post the letters back marked with "return to sender" unopened, stops you worrying and believe me the letters will soon stop, just remember you not breaking any laws by not having a tv licence so why should you have to let them in to check the tv, isn`t your word good enough, are they questioning your integrity as a law abiding person, if they come back with Police (which they won`t) and you gotta bit of front, you would do well just reminding that officer of the law that he`s a servent of the public and his job is to protect and serve the public (you & your family) and he`s not a servent to the Government, but in 6 years i`ve never once had police at my door and only twice the tv licence peeps. I follow, fit and come into all the above mentioned criteria so i don`t need one. Tv boxes well you can`t beat the Amazon fire tv box these days and then just get the app/medi sweet > kodi(xbmc) go on youtube for best kodi add ons for films, sport etc and take it from their as they not pre-installed on kodu media sweet, you can watch most movies from that or tv so long as it`s not live streaming Another box that i been looking at just recently is this www.fasttech.com/products/1/10013971/2375301-cx-w8-quad-core-1080p-windows-8-1-x64-tv-box-mini a bargain at twice the price if it is those specs in reality and just unstall kodi then your tv is in effect a big pc with windows 8.

www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/tv-licencei know that catchup tv is licence free as free from copyright, but what has me wondering lol if i watch Sky TV that is broadcast and unlocked from a different timezone then i am not exactly watching live, yes we know that some tv that you can get acutally comes from another country uncrypted ie tell by the adverts ,now if old BBC trys to snoop on your dear old ip addy then using a VPN scuttles all that then But how could they do that, it`s illegal or they need a warrant to do so and to get a warrant your talking national security terrorist type stuff atmo. Europe has some of the strongest anti snoop laws when it comes to being online, but not much longer mind you with this lot in power every e-mail will be capable of being read by government agencies saved on a server somwhere indefinately, atmo our isp providers i think are only allowed to save this for a year or 2 before it`s destroyed if my memory serves me right lol, our government is gonna make it so it`s saved indefinately pretty soon. Your on the right track about encryption with vpn i very rarely use my pc without it turned on, but even these aren`t 100% secure nowadays,

you need a license for any equipment capable of receiving a tv signal whether you use it or not.. blind folk using 8 hour video tape recorders to record radio broadcasts have been scuppered by this..just read the link above - i was wrong!! the chromecast dongle lets you 'cast' the contents of a web browser to your tv if you use google chrome as a web browser its as simple as clicking the cast icon top right hand corner of the browser.. so browse to itv catchup on the puter and send it to the tv Cheers phatfil, Just had a read up but looks as though ITV Catchup doesn't work with chromecast...... Unless I was reading an outdated review?
