On the 16th, I went to restart my lappie & there was an update waiting, so, I hit restart & update. Since then, AltGr is frustratingly not working any more & that is a right PITA, especially for here. Plus, there are other things going on with the touchpad, which is ruining any enjoyment from some daft games I like to play. Also, I scroll & it just goes on its own & that is annoying on here too. Oh & the thing that hit me first, before finding the other things, I now have a touch keyboard on the tool bar & I don't have touch screen!! I un tick to hide it & any restart & there it is again!!
I am computer illiterate, so you'll probably laugh at my question, but on the update & after trying to find out why AltGr wasn't working, I noticed there was this installed in Programs & Features.... synaptics pointing device driver update 19.0.11.1. If I remove this, will my computing world cease to exist & will you all have total peace from me or will I be back to my happy & unfrustrated self, pottering on my lappie without the above carp going on?
Hoping it's the latter, but in simplistic terms.......

Hi jess, Your detective skills more than make up for any imagined computer illiteracy. Good show! Remove that 19.0.11.1. driver. If you need a new driver (jess in case LOL) get it directly from Synaptics (current Version is 16 I think) BEFORE removing the old one. You are on the right path, me thinks.
Cheers I

If it was an update from Microsoft. You could try 'rolling back' the offending update by using 'system restore' which can be found by going to 'Control Panel/Recovery' on that page you will see a button that says 'Open system restore' clicking on this will open system restore and you should find a restore point that matches the date you installed the last update(as windows would have taken a snapshot of your system files before installing it. Just be aware that anything that was added after that date will no longer work and will need to be reinstalled.
If it was an update from someone else. Windows may not have taken a snapshot before you installed it. You would have to try and spot the changes that were made on the install date and manually uninstall them(which i think is what you are doing now, by checking Programs and Features and uninstalling anything that was added on the date the update was installed).
If you need to hide the update once you are sorted, then you should set 'Windows Updated' to 'Check for updates but let you choose whether to download and install' This way you can 'Hide' the update before it is downloaded and windows should then keep it hidden from future 'searches'.

Thank you both, for your replies. izan, it stops at detecting which took a while! I will go in search of a replacement before removal, if that is needed, thanks. Before doing that, thanks, hijack I'll see if System Restore works & it was certainly from a Windows update. After having a peruse around the forum, I'll go try. As, I may be gone some time.

Thank you again, izan. To update, I've done the deeds. First off, System Restore. After doing that, I had a pop up that told me that it hadn't completed successfully. The restore point was damaged or deleted during the restore. So, undid & back to how it was before. Then downloaded the above & removed the updated Synaptics. Tested just the AltGR as that was a simple test & it worked again. As I haven't got the ability to change how the pad works now, I did try to get the linked to driver working, but that wasn't happy either, I can't remember what it said, but I've left that for now. I didn't use the majority of what the pad does anyway, so for now, that isn't a problem. The main thing is, the annoying scrolling has stopped & AltGr is back. Also, I have now checked the box check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install. So m'dears, thank you very much, I am very happy now.

Thats ok jess, glad to hear that you have got the majority of use back. That system restore can be a bit hit and miss, depending on how long ago you are wanting to restore. I thought the 10 days or so since install it would still work for you. It helped me last time i used it, after updating from sp1 and comp crashed during the 208 updates, i was left with about half that had failed. So restore was an easy fix that had my comp back to sp1 and the 2nd time i tried update, they all went in no problem.

Thanks, hijack. I'm glad you've said it can be hit or miss & it seems you got the hit & I got the miss. It did give me the choice of three restoration points/dates, the middle was the update one, so it's odd that it didn't want to play. Anyway, at least I know now for future reference, even though it didn't work this time.

That should work in future if you get the prob again jess
