Avidemux is one of the best ,free and also very good quality of your final movie conversion. Work under linux and windows . 2nd option is XMedia Recode ,also a very good option. i was having 0 issues with XMedia Recode (except my own mistakes) ,very often updated , very good quality on conversion ,easy to use . For any program you instal i recommend to uncheck all the boxes , install only the program not toolbars or other programs which may come together .Also for both of this programs you don't need to install any codecs of filters which can damage your windows ,both have they'r own filters and codecs . Hope helps a good place for reviews and officially updated link to downloads free and free to try programs : www.softpedia.com/ ....feel free to remove link if i brake a rule .thx

@chris2005........I thought I'd install XMedia as it's only a small file. I've managed to open/load an audio track (mp3), but for the life of me, I can't work out how to add photos to it. In other words, I want to make a slideshow & add music to it. There doesn't seem to be a decent user guide for it anywhere.

"Life...........is just a bowl of tricks!!!!!!" for slideshow on top of free is still an old microsoft program called Microsoft Photo Story 3.0 link ....unfortunately we don't have very good program to make slideshow from pictures for free. From paid software i found good reviews on link ....price is 39,99$ or free to try 30 days ... i will try to find for you something , just give me a bit of time .... i found for you this link , if is a simple slideshow give a try
