an uninstall and reinstall from the original downloaded sources may prove/disprove that @hubcap
depends on how long ago you downloaded and it was a local or remote install tho

Very recommended by many magazine reviewers because it works, actually has a very good detection rate, Isn't a resource hog and never heard of any versions damaging the OS, highly recommended IMO. some of the issues of Avast ....: Issue #1 – Windows Action Center Says Avast Antivirus is Turned Off .....Issue #2 – Windows Won’t Start and Displays only a Blank/Black Screen .....issue #3 – Windows Keeps Saying to Uninstall Avast Antivirus but It’s Already Uninstalled ......Issue #4 – ‘Process Trust’ Error During Avast Antivirus Installation ....also IMO : RAM is good for maximizing the applications to run but not to maintain the applications resource usage, processor and number of cores should take care the overall handle. A myth that should be vanish and avoid misinterpretation by the media.Avast may use less memory but there are other solutions that don't cause an increase in system response time. How much memory is used by a product doesn't indicate how light it will run on your system.

Total windows meltdown over the weekend, denial of service virus shagged my PC despite having ESET NOD32 protecting it. Now running Ubuntu, which makes windows look and feel like a drunk slug on acid.

What fun. Never used an antivirus, spyware blahblah in my life. Never had a problem. It's all reaction software. They have to be notified of a threat before they can "prevent" it. If you are having problems, switch the bugger off.

I've only used Windows security essentials and never had any trouble in the last six years.

Total windows meltdown over the weekend, denial of service virus shagged my PC despite having ESET NOD32 protecting it. Now running Ubuntu, which makes windows look and feel like a drunk slug on acid. +1 for running linux ..... I tried Ubuntu a couple of years ago and was impressed at the speed it sorts out and installs essential drivers and the like, connecting to the internet is a breeze. The only bug bear was that WINE, the emulator that allows Windows programs to run on Linux was pretty hit and miss. There are a few guitar related programs that I find essential and can't live without, however this seems to have been sorted. I have successfully installed and ran a number of Windows programs without problem so it's all looking good. The only thing I'm a bit puzzled about, is Ubuntu connected to the internet without me having to input the WPA2 password. That's a tad disconcerting.

I always love a good 'this AV is better than that' or 'reasons not to install that AV' conversation. The best AV is safe practice. Don't visit dodgy sites. Places like Web of Trust carry lists of these and you can get a plugin for your webbrowser that'll warn you about these dodgy sites before it'll let the page open. I only ever open emails I'n expecting, which is virtually every email I get since spam assassin takes care of my inbox server side. I don't run AV. Last AV I ran was avast, back in 2004. Since then I've never had a problem. Online scan yearly at eset has never thrown anything up. The best AV in the world is YOU - with a little self-training
