peter12 afaik.... strumming the coil with a screwdriver is employed more with a kanthal build along with pulsing power without a wick to get the coil glowing from the inside out and evenly. when this technique ia applied to Ni200 wire the pulsing and heating will anneal or soften the coil to the point that wicking with anything other than a loose wick can easily deform the coil...

No, I got bored doing a dry burn test last year IIRC it didn't mark up to 500 F ad I just thought that's good enough to never need to worry.
