understanding guage measurements

So was just about to order some kanthal. Maybe some Ni200 too. For kanthal figured I'd get 22 24 28 and 34. Ni200 no idea never purchased before can build down to 0.1 ohm like lots if surface area but low resistance.

Anyways the guage were strange to me. 22/23 awg etc this mean it's not 22 but in fact in between 22 and 23 guage?

Also does the 22 guage just mean .22mm ?

Disregard the resistance I think it is for copper wire.

No it doesn't , not sure off hand but the lower the gauge, the thicker the wire , so 22awg is probably around .5mm or so. The AWG stands for American wire gauge, there's lots of conversion charts on the net., some retailers even have one on their sites, hope this helps

fwiw 26 gauge or circa .4mm kanthal is my go to wire for 7-8 wrap 0.5ohm coils.. I see you missed that off your proposed shopping list.

Don't forget you can twist thinner wires together to make thicker gauges.

Just threw me seeing 22/23 awg then 23/24 and then 24 and so on

But yeah it seems they are in between guages

So they don't do 22 exactly or 34 exactly
