I may be born and bred English, but I have been known to sing the odd verse of The Flower of Scotland while drunk on occasion with my Scottish best man. Except at Twickenham for the England Scotland game. Fortunately on that occasion the score was a draw so England retained the Calcutta Cup, but bragging rights were even.

I happily sing GSTQ not that it should be used by England in my opinion.

GSTQ is the United Kingdom national anthem, I agree not just England's. England need to use a different one when it's just England competing, not Great Britain & Northern Ireland. Although I was reading a good article arguing to get rid of GSTQ for UK sporting events and have another, more about the UK not the Queen. Keep GSTQ for more royal type events.

I posted exactly the same on another thread. GSTQ for royal events. Rule Britannia or I Vow to Thee my Country for GB/NI sports teams.

I think we need a whole new one. Rule Britannia is not too bad, especially the original version, although a tad imperialistic and more about the navy ruling the waves. Jerusalem is a bit too godified, and only mentions England, not Scotland or Wales, and is the anthem for the jam brigade. Which leaves Land of Hope and Glory, but that has already been nicked by the England rugby fans, so probably not appropriate. I Vow to Thee my Country, doesn't actually name which country it is being sung about, so again needs a bit of amendment, although on the whole a better alternative to GSTQ for national events.

Don't forget the good people of Northern Ireland (I am of Ulster Scots too) use GSTQ too. Oddly I don't have an issue with that. No idea why.
