On top of battery safety, other well know design issues with mechs include designing to channel the energy from venting away from the face by having plenty or room for the gas to travel the the vent holes and have much weaker threads at the bottom so the bottom will be blown off fist. But I just came across this, the hybrid cap was a known bad idea with flat top batteries, it was OK with button top batteries, but you don't see those much these days.
