Ok folks, thoughts on this one....

A young man who claims an e-cigarette exploded in his mouth is recovering from agonising injuries.

Factory worker Ryan Bailey, 22, suffered burns to his lips and a hand, plus damage to his teeth, after his Knight Mod e-cig allegedly blew up while he was smoking it.

His carpet was set on fire, he was rushed to hospital and he has had four emergency operations on his left hand, including a skin graft.

He said today: “I am just lucky to still be here. The doctors said that if the explosion had not hit my teeth, it would have gone down my throat and killed me.”

Ryan’s ordeal follows reports of at least 100 exploding e-cigarettes. Some 2.6 million Britons now use them and they are set to be offered on prescription by GPs.

Ryan, of Telford, Shopshire, is facing a fifth operation to repair the damage fully. He will also have ­extensive dental work.

He told the Sunday People: “The whole thing has been terrible and it isn’t over yet.”

The trauma happened at home at midday on Wednesday, January 20.

“It suddenly blew up in my mouth,” said Ryan. “There was no warning. My sister was screaming and crying and rang for an ­ambulance."

"I couldn’t feel any pain at first because of the adrenaline so I didn’t know how bad it was. I put out the fire on the carpet then I looked down at my hand and then in the mirror. I couldn’t believe it.

“My face was black where it had blown up and my hand had swollen to twice its size. It was like having had a stick of dynamite explode in my hand.”

Last month there were reports of how dad-of-two Kevin Woodward suffered horrific burns to his face and arms when an Eleaf iStick e-cigarette, which he had left on charge overnight, erupted at 4.30am while he was sleeping.

Mr Woodward, 30, said it felt as if someone had held a “blow torch” to his face.

His three-year-old son Taylor had got out of the bed in Northwich, Cheshire, two hours earlier – possibly ­saving his life.

Last year a series of fires caused by ­exploding e-cigarette chargers prompted a nationwide safety alert in Britain.

The Local Government Association, representing fire services, urged e-cigarette manufacturers to display warnings on packaging after more than 100 blazes over the past two years were linked to the devices.

Exploding e-cigarettes have triggered three major lawsuits in the US after victims ­had multiple severe burns and lost body parts.

Former LA Galaxy ­footballer Daniel Califf, 35, ended up with a broken cheekbone, concussion, a hole in his cheek and ­burns across his face, ear and neck after his e-cigarette battery exploded.

Vince Garza, 23, talks with a lisp after his tongue was left mangled when his device blew up. His index finger had to be amputated at the knuckle because it was so badly damaged.

Gregory Phillips had severe second-degree burns across a leg and needed two skin graft operations after his e-cigarette battery exploded in his pocket as he left an e-cigarette shop.

E-cigarette manufacturers should display prominent safety warnings on all kits and chargers, says the Local Government Association.

They say firefighters are now being called to e-cigarette-related incidents every week.

The LGA’s Jeremy Hilton said: “We urge manufacturers to ­introduce clear, prominent and graphic new warnings spelling out the dangers of using incompatible chargers with e-cigarette batteries.

“We are warning e-cigarette ­users that it is simply not worth risking their lives to save a few pounds by buying dodgy, dangerous or incompatible chargers.”

It might be harsh of me to say, but don't use a mech mod if you don't know what you are doing! (which this might be a case).

Maybe I should tell the news rags about the numerous times I fell asleep with a fag in my hand and burned God knows how many pillows and duvet covers and how if my light-sleeping wife hadn't woke up, We might have burned to death .... Would there then be a concerted campaign to ban cigarettes ... I very much doubt it.

I'm so sad to see this reckless reportage. There are so many facts not included, and so much assumption without adequate research.

What battery was he using?
What atomiser did he have on top?
What resistance was he using at the time?
Was it an isolated puff, or had he been caning the mod?
What sort of juice was he vaping at the time?
Was the battery fresh or partially discharged?
What sort of charger was being used for the batteries?

Does anyone know what a Knight mod looks like - BRB - correction, here's a link Knight Mod It's not a cheap mod at over £100, but that doesn't mean anything if it wasn't being used correctly.

It seems strange that with the amount of vaping going on in this forum, to my knowledge no-one has ever suffered any major injury due to vaping, unless that person was pushing the boundaries of physics.

I agree with you chykensa . We also don't know how long he had been vaping.

I have learned so much about battery care and the dangers of batteries that I am much (much) more careful than I would have been otherwise. In fact if I go back to one of my very first posts here I am now deeply embarrassed.  The advantage of this forum is that we gain the benefits of wisdom from early-adopter experts such as VapingBad Ripshod  and others. 

With the explosion of new vapours it is almost inevitable that these things happen. I wonder if you asked this guy about current discharge he would understand a question, let alone be able to answer it. Unfortunately people expect this stuff to work and be safe, they don't realise the differences and dangers of batteries and particularly batteries in mechs. I fear we are in the situation where governments will be forced to regulate (no pun intended) the electrical side of vaping as it becomes even more mainstream.

Ah - thanks, Bob, I hadn't realised it was old news. And yes, I agree, the Dad should be held to account. No matter how safe we make things, there's no accounting for stupidity
I accidentally spilt a drop of bleach on my jeans yesterday, whipped them off and stuck them straight in the washing machine, but the bleached blob of shame will be there from now on. Just as well they weren't anything like new. Human error is accountable for most if not all accidents, and this vaping 'accident' is no exception.

Me too, as this gentleman is 22 years of age . . . . I'd be very, very surprised if user error wasn't the cause of this incident.

Which regrettably doesn't get reported as it's not sufficiently sensational to grab attention.

Who is selling people £100 mechanicals 'because they look nice' or 'hit hard' (or whatever) and why are people buying them without really knowing what's going on?

Stupidity all round. I for one feel embarrassed to be part of the culture that gives uneducated e-cig users dangerous equipment.

Poor bloke. You can bet he had no idea, can you not?

most likely cause is he was running stupidly thick wire for silly low ohms and made a dead short after dropping/rewicking the atty and not checking it
he could of been using a cloned batt unknowingly

tbh I'm surprised were not seeing more of these thank to the noisy cricket ect

sub ohm is probably doing more damage to vapeing in the last year than any thing else

if your going to sub ohm on your mech make sure you know the kits limits and stay well within them
