Mikev - hi and a warm welcome from me too! You've certainly come to the right place, loads of help and advice, and some experienced mixers to help you out too.
I would concur with the advice above about nicotine; your hunch about buying in the nic base now, and then relaxing and taking it at your own speed would be spot on. If you are prepared to let us know where you are in the UK, someone local to you might be prepared to meet up and give you advice in person, which might help.

Update, I have just taken delivery of 4x250ml in PLASTIC bottles - not impressed - sorry to have misled anyone I have rebottled in brown glass bottles which was how my last lot came from everything eliquid
