Hi all, I have a tropical aquarium with a few varieties off fish, including a solitary male Sailfin Mollie. I keep trying to pair it up with a female Mollie. Everyone I introduce a new female Mollie to the tank, it dies. Basically the male chases it around the tank that much trying to get laid, that it stresses the female out and she dies. I've lost that many females, that I can't risk putting any more in to the tank. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what to do. Cheers When I've bough Mollies in the past, my local fish shop insists on selling either single sex or a ratio of 3 females to 1 male, for exactly that reason. I've no idea as to how true it is, or whether it will help you, as I've only had this pair as a pair, and they're fine, they were alone when I got them. But it might help to put more females in, so they can share the load so to speak. I have heard this advice elsewhere as well, but like I say, no actual experience I'm afraid. My friend also has a pair of sailfins, one male, one female, but he has other female dalmation and black mollies in there too, all of his are fine.

You need 1 male to about 5 females if you can, randy little buggas they are The males will hound the females constantly for their nuptials The fry will head for the surface after a while and that's where they become prey to any other fish who's mouths they fit in What other fish do you have in there? If you have a large enough clump of plants that break the surface of the water then the fry will stay in amongst it safe and sound but if they have no such place to hide then you'll lose a fair few. Angel fish will be their biggest threat.

How do you tell which ones are Female? Do you get a magnifying glass and see which ones have lipstick on? The males are the ones chasing the poor females around all the time and won't leave them in peace!! Sound familiar?
