We've got molly fry They're so cute. Only thing is I don't know whether to leave them be, and risk them being eaten by the parents, or try to catch the ones we can and put them in a trap, risking stressing them out and hurting them Our aquarium is planted, and they seem to be doing ok in the really bushy plants. Hiding in there, they can get in and out, their parents can't. So I'm leaning towards leaving them alone. Anyone else keep fish?

I used to keep fish but now I vape Are the plants real or artificial? My fry used to survive if the plants were thick enough to keep the adults out. Some got eaten if they ventured out too far, but many made it through to adulthood.

They are all real plants, The fry seem to have some wit about them, as they have chosen the thickest, bushiest plant to hide in, they are feeding off it too, so that's good, no need to venture out unless they are feeling brave. There isn't anything too big in that aquarium either, few young guppys, 2 youngish mollies (the parents) some Neon Tetras, and a couple of very young bristlenose plecs. So nothing really threatening apart from the parents and maybe the guppies. I've kept fish for quite a while, but never bred before. I like guppies a lot, and with them you have to be careful not to mix sexes, as you do with the mollies, because they both breed like crazy and you can be overrun. But we took these mollies on as a pair, so have no choice now. Hopefully when (not if ) the fry survive, I can seperate the females off, so I'm not overrun. EDIT REASON: all this talk of bread was making me hungry!!!

They're cute Perps, did you leave them to make their own way in the main tank? How did they do?

I had tropical fish for years, love watching them in their own little world Alvo, I would leave them in my heavy planted tank, but when it wasnt so many plants I used to try and get some just in case. Didnt always have the heart to leave them. Aww Perpy, that brings back memories

We bred swordtails a few years ago and put Mum in a small tank we'd set up on her own when we knew she was about to give birth. About 60% survived as there's always some fry weaker than others. When they were half grown, we put them in the main tank. All fry are at risk from being eaten from adult fish as they love live food, but they are wise enough to stay hidden, you will lose some, even though your aquarium is densely planted. The bigger ones, probably the parents, will catch them unaware while they're feeding as they're crafty too. They're safe from the plecs. as they're vegetarians! We have put fry in floating traps before with a little piece of floating plant to shield them from the tank light, but I wasn't happy with it. I think they're too small. Though there is an adult sword tail in one now as she's not well and the others were picking on her. If you're intending on breeding fish 'full time', it's worth getting a small breeding tank. For the time being, I would suggest you leave them in the tank, keep an eye on them to see if you can notice if the numbers seem to be depleting and keep the others well fed so they're not hungry enough to eat the babies.

The fry in that photo look like guppies . I shall complain to Photobucket in that case Anne . . . as they were in the Molly Fry section.
