OK, dont know if this will be useful to anyone, but here it is anyway. Many ISPs provide poor access via the servers they use, but thats not the end of the story. Third-party DNS servers can be faster than your ISP’s DNS servers. This isn’t guaranteed — it will depend on your geographic location, how close the third-party DNS servers are to you, and how slow your ISP’s DNS servers are. If all you care about is speed, you may see an advantage from switching to a third-party DNS server — or you may not. To be sure, you should run a DNS benchmarking tool like Namebench, which will make DNS requests to your current DNS server and other DNS servers, testing how long each server takes to respond. If you want to use google DNS, simply go to your router setup and in the DNS enter Primary DNS 8 8 8 8 Secondary DNS 8 8 4 4 Here is mine with Talktalk Access type: VDSL IPv4 status: Connected WAN IP Address: XX.31.XXX.21 Primary DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 Secondary DNS Server: 8.8.4.4 IPv4 default gateway: XX.31.XXX.1 xx I have removed More info here for those interested www.howtogeek.com/167239/7-reasons-to-use-a-third-party-dns-service/OpenDNS (free or 80p a month) Allows you to control what the kids do and dont do....they cant get past this. Free blocks Stop the kids and the porn etc. Well worth a look. I know some of your ISPs can do this, but not all.

DNS servers are basically a massive lookup, they convert any web address from www.whatever.com to the pure IP address, eg 208.67.222.222 (which incidentally is one of the OpenDNS servers), sorting out routing of data packets as they go and they all operate at different speeds, which can speed up/slow down how your internet traffic behaves...... .... although a few milliseconds here or there doesn't make a massive difference, a few hundred milliseconds can and does
