Bit random and hope it's okay to ask. I've had rats on and off for 10+ years. I recently rescued 7 females from a bit of a horror home. I though - apart from being a little under weight they were fine. I was wrong, I think they have lice. (Never came across this with any of my other rats) I can see things moving on their back and some (not all) have bites on their backs. Can anyone recommend treatment? I can't handle them very well at the moment so a vet visit would be hard but I won't rule it out. I've read that ivermectin 1.87 is good. I'm finding it hard to locate online. Also bathing in olive oil is meant to be good?? If anyone has any suggestion I'm all ears!! Thanks for any help

catx tagging @johanino who I believe has some rats (although I think that she said that she has internet/computer problems at the moment). Also @tmfkatubthumper may have some furry rodents too? Not sure who else

I used to keep rats and would advise a trip to the vets really. There are a few different parasites that can affect pet rats so it would be best to get expert advice on treatment.

catx Never had a lice infestation before so cant offer much advice Probably some sort of shampoo will fix the problem phone up your vet for advice is the best bet. Also make sure to scrub down cage to prevent reinfection.

catx Although I wouldn't want one as pet, I hope you can get it cleared up. I know that contrary to some misconceptions rats are really clean wee animals and it's probably distressing for them. Good on you for rescuing them

Not to worry. I watched a few youtubes and ordered some stuff for my ladies. Will take a few weeks of cleaning and giving them their meds but hopefully everything will turn out right for them.

Good luck with them, rats really are amazing pets. I just wish I was in a position to have more of them.
