As a child, growing up in a Glasgow Housing Scheme, just before Christmas each year a soggy brown paper parcel would be gingerly delivered by our Postman. Dad always had a glib excuse for the obvious blood that was running out through the paper wrapping, although I doubt if Mr Posty believed him. Inside was a rather “past it’s used by” date, raw, but plucked Chicken. The chicken and its wrapping quickly went in the bin, but not before “its stuffing” was first removed, because “the stuffing” was a bottle of Irish Moonshine. All I ever got was a small glass much diluted with Lemonade, but I still remember the taste. It was nice and ever so smooth. Years later and having moved Doon the Waater to our present location, I met a guy that worked in one of the local Whisky Distillers. He was selling lemonade bottles of undiluted 3 year old Whisky at 5 bob a bottle. That’s 5 shillings in old money. Well you couldn’t say no at that price and I got bottle or 3. It was a clear spirit, complete with a few wood shavings floating in it as it came from the left overs of barrels that had gone to the cooperage to be repaired. Again it was smooth, but, oh my, it was strong!!!!
On asking him about the difficulties of smuggling such stuff out of the Distillery, he said, well there are 6 Customs guys who work from 9am until 5pm, 5 days a week and there are about 40 guys working shifts, 7 days a week who are trying to figure out how to get the Good Stuff out of the place. You can guess who is going to win in the long run!
I have the impression that the TDP will travel much the same road.

I am told that my uncles used to have a glass or two of that stuff "before" they went to the pub for the evening. Just as well they were non-smokers as lighting anything near their mouths after that lot would have been highly dangerous!!!!
