I'm in a bit of a quandary. I've gone back to using kanthal and I've had lovely claptons in for a few months now. They just seem to keep working and working without a problem. My question is, how do I know if they need changing as they seem to just keep going? I've been coiling a few years now and usually just change out just because, but surely if they're still going good then I've probably been wasting wire. I should know the answer after vaping for so long but I don't lol. Any advice please?

The only thing i've found with dry burning and reusing coils is over time they will gunk up quicker than a new coil. Doesn't affect the performance they just need cleaning more often.
With normal round wire i just rip the coils out and install new ones the wire is cheap and it only takes a few seconds to wrap a coil. With more complex coils like claptons or aliens i dry burn and clean them.

I'm using parallel claptons exclusively atm so it's nice they'll last so long. I use 4 tanks and wick them weekly and all seems perfik

Interesting Maybe it's because the surface gets pitted over time and loses the shine. .... Now that's something I've not come across. ... I certainly am no expert in coils and I have only ever used simple kanthal contact coils at somewhat humble wattages (always less than 20 watts), but I've certainly noticed that my coils do slowly "go off" over time. That's over a long time - like months - with numerous dryburns over their life. Finally, after a good while, I sorta get the feeling "that's not quite as qood as I remember". Wind a new coil, rewick and presto, back to how I remember. Somehow, it's sorta cleaner and fresher tasting. I cannot explain why - just that I've found kanthal coils, for me, do seem to age with use. Not that I find it to be any particular problem - kanthal's cheap and it really doesn't take that long to make a new simple coil (when I can work up the motivation to do so).

When using mothers milk I find my coils get extremely gunked up and for me it's just as easy to wind a new coil as it is to clean the old one. Using my strawberry milkshake though, I find it takes a couple of weeks for the coil to gunk. I use stainless steel wire in everything except my egrips and due to the fact that you shouldn't dry burn ss wire to the point of glowing it makes cleaning them a chore so again I just wind a couple of new ones. And as stated above, a dry burned coil never lasts as long as a freshly installed one and the properties of the wire will degrade from constant heating and cooling over time and a coil is at its best when it's just broken in from being freshly wound so 90% of the time I will install fresh.

Being a lazy (and busy) git, I have some dual Claptons in a Geekvape Griffin that are almost a year old, with numerous tanks through the tanks each week. A quick dryburn and re-wick is all that is required when the taste gets a bit less than perfect. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto! Having said that, I have just taken delivery of a pack of 18 twisted fused Claptons from good ol' Fasttech and will re-coil the aforementioned tanks over the Christmas to see what they perform like, but only because I now have them. I might leave one tank untouched to see how long I can make the tanks last!

Great info here cheers I'm feeling quite happy and can stop worrying about nothing. I do find fused clapton spits far less than normal claptons for some reason
