Yep, it is hard to find, you can't just google paypal USD GBP rate and see it at the top of the list, which is why I started this thread.

I look at everything now in $ once it's in the basket. (I use £ for shopping but just reckon they are way out, not in my favour.... as you say).
In fairness, they should change their rate(s) and maybe some GBP users should tackle them on this. It's misleading and don't think they can get away with it using a disclaimer, not when it's so far wrong.

Their rate is quite wrong ATM it has 0.7543 and PayPal GBP to USD for payments is 1.19190 or 0.8390, even changing the Fx page to convert in the same direction it's 1.1427. I suspected it is only good for sending money and not payments, but checking that in PP gives 1.19805, changing the amount in Fx doesn't change the rate so have to conclude that Fx page is just wrong, with the rate. I checked my last FT purchase with the method in the OP before checkout and it is correct to the penny.

Looks like FT havent altered the GBP rate on their site,
Maybe a better idea, when using Paypal, is to use the option of your Bank's exchange rate...
$1.19 is a terrible rate, the actual rate is hovering around 1.225 to 1.23....

yeah, but did you know if paying with a card via your PP account, you can set PP to use your card issuer's rate rather than theirs, e.g. visa europe's rate is only usually 1 cent lower than the full currency market rate, so you get more $ for your $. E.g. if the £:$ rate is $1.24 on the currency market, PP may give you $1.19, Visa's rate will be around $1.225, so is often your best bet

Think I'll give this a whirl next time I buy anything from FT . . . . which won't be until there's another discount offered: www.paypal.com/gb/selfhelp/article/how-do-i-send-or-receive-money-in-a-different-currency-faq1811?app=searchAutoCompleteWhen you use your credit card as the payment method, we ask you to choose who performs the currency conversion:
If you choose PayPal, we can show you the conversion rate at the time of the transaction
If you choose the credit card association currency conversion, your card issuer will determine the foreign exchange rate to apply to the transaction. You will not be informed of the foreign exchange rate or any additional foreign exchange fees applied until you are billed by your card issuerCan't be any worse . . . . . .
