Australian cigarette prices. Very much inflated by huge and rising government taxes: linky" ...Tobacco tax on cigarettes has just risen by 13%, from 62 cents to 70 cents per cigarette, which equates to a packet of cigarettes which previously cost $32.50, now costing $35.20..." and " ...A packet of cigarettes in Australia costs an average of $25.10, while in the UK it would cost $14.80 and $8.50 in the US..." So many stories now circulating of hooked smokers not being able to afford basics like food or medicine and of a thriving black market in tobacco. I am so glad I'm free from that.

Me too I nearly choked when I went to the counter about six months back to buy a pack of tailor mades instead of my usual tobacco pouch and being charged £9 and it wasn't even a full deck of 20 ! The sneaky buggers take one out now and charge for 19 ! I remember the days when I used to buy a pack of 10 for about £2.48 and joke around with my mates that one day they'll be a fiver for a pack of 20 the way it's going we will all be scrambling around the streets for dog ends to smoke because we won't be able to afford it ! How times change eh ?

I remember buying a single fag and a match for 2 pence. They were usually sovereign brand or woodbine.

$25 AUS is £15 in the UK. Something is wrong with the world when governments think they can price people out of smoking but not have a liberal attitude to vaping instead. Taxing addicts does not work to any meaningful degree. As you say DaveJ - it's good you are out of all that.

My first packet was 20 Bristol which cost me 2/6. I think that was my first packs too, though I moved to Embassy fairly soon after.
