I'm fairly diligent in my coil maintenance... I dry burn, tweezer scrape etc. and re-wick weekly but I've noticed the coil itself also seems to go off fairly quickly.
Most of my coils are on .30 kanthal at around the 1.1 / 1.2 ohm mark and I've noticed changes in the flavour of my juice and a tendency to taste like the wick is burnt even after replacing with fresh cotton bacon.
This evening I rewound a new coil and fitted and all is good again, so how long should the actual coil last? I seem to get no more than maybe 6 weeks from mine.

Hi,
I get about 4 weeks or 300ml or so out of my coils using rayon. SS and Ni80 mostly, both single wire builds and simple one core claptons. (VV Superfine) A new coil gets a re wick when needed, when I find I need to rewick every couple days...it's time for a new coil.

Probably the wire, I have ss coils that are about a year old and som Ni200 coils that must be at least 2.5 years old that are fine, but I have experienced your issue in the distant past. May be worth checking the connection tightness, but you probably have.

Hmmm I've never noticed I've had to change a coil before. Just through so much experimenting with different wires and atties they've been changed. I'm now at my happy place and ain't changing anything for the first year of my vaping life, so I suppose I might notice something. Sorry that doesn't help, I just felt like a ramble 😂

I had the same thing using kanthal. Finding now the need to change coils is less frequent since I started using Ni80.

Well I use Kanthal and don't really have a problem. Rewick once per week or longer if using non-gunking juice. Usually I recoil when the coil gets misshapen or if it breaks due to metal fatigue. Never really noticed any degradation in flavour due to the coil. Maybe you have a bad batch of wire?

Most wires ppl are using are alloys and can vary a lot for vaping requirements but still stay in spec for industrial requirements, I find Ni200 to be the most stable (99% pure metal), some ss wires last, some so don't, guessing the same for Ni80 and what claims to be Kanthal (it's a TM product IIRC). To me the common factor is higher iron content and industrial specs and that is so a semi educated guess that makes sense to me. I have got good wire from bad vendors and bad wire from good, pure single metal is more predictable, alloys can be fantastic but are a bit of a gamble.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess it might be an idea to try NI200 again. I've got some but never really got on with it. Any tips or suggestions on how to prepare a decent NI200 coil ?

I'm in agreement with VapingBad and jtc ! So I'm going to change one of my Kanthal coils just to see if it makes a difference.

New coil fitted this morning. Unfortunately I am unable to say it made a significant amount of difference, certainly not enough to warrant re-coiling.

I notice the burnt taste/constant need for rewicking when a coil is coming to the end of it's life as well. Can't say how long a coil lasts though. I don't tend to keep track of things like that but its definitely longer than 6 weeks. Juice throughput would be a better measure of how long they are lasting as some people get through a lot more tankful's in 6 weeks than others. Dry burning too much or too fiercely can have a big effect on the coil though. Even at 6 weeks I would guess they are lasting longer than your average stock prebuilt ones

Doing a weekly dry-burn and re-wick just now I would add that I dry-burn with the min heat to get the cold to glow and would expect that to help ageing by reducing metal fatigue.
