I wouldn't stack li-ions if you paid me to, especially not if I'm using them so close to my face. When they go off, even vented, that's a lot of energy in a critical area. If one battery goes - the other goes and that's twice the energy.
It's not too often I hear of li-ions in ecigs exploding or thankfully venting properly instead but when I do it's a reminder to be very careful about how I care for these batteries.
If they don't explode, you're lucky. If they don't explode they vent which means a lot of energy in one small area. The energy of an entire explosion is concentrated into one point. It can turn ecigs even with venting into a rocket. The batteries themselves can act like a rocket when they vent.
Nothing is safe with a li-ion in it, even a laptop or mobile phone. It's a small risk to use a li-ion but the risk is always there and anything that increases the risk of a failure, including stacking, does not sit well with me.
I don't like that ecigs have a bad press for "exploding". No, the ecig didn't explode, the li-ion exploded as they have done in mobile phones and other appliances for years but you don't often hear about mobiles being a potential hazard to your ear and face.
You can do all you can to prevent a li-ion battery failure but if it's going to fail, it's going to fail. I don't wish it on anyone and odds are it wont happen to you but I'd sooner know I'm doing everything I can to prevent it in the first place and be ready to cope with it if it happens.
