Apparently I'm gettin on a bit and have received a form to renew my lorry driving entitlement, question is i no longer use it as i'm a heating engineer, and would only use it if i could no longer get a job doing that. now it could be good as a backup but i would have to take a medical, cost £85 and no doubt half a day of work, and the renewed entitlement only lasts for 5 years, then repeat it does say that one can apply at a later date if required, it says nothing about having to do the test again which would be the biggest hurdle, so that's good, what do you reckon ???

Always going to be a need for heating engineers , especially come winter , just like we had record callouts for aircon problems the other week when it was warm

Dori, I mean bluefish, I would say go for it, as it is only 85 for 5 years, that is £17 a year. if you did do a job where you drove a lorry you would make that back and more (i mean the 85 not the 17 lol) Things like that are always needed just when you have got rid of them.

OK Blue fish your entitlement is revoked only until such a time as you take a medical again so you can go a few years without and once you re-take a medical it will be added again
incidently you will also need to take driver cpc which is 35 hours classroom lessons teaching you how to do what you already know i.e health and safety, first aid, working time directive, defect reporting and pre checks, etc initially this was set up to do one lesson of a minimum 7 hrs per year to complete the full 35 hrs over a five year period of which we have grandfather rights. this is compulsory and has to be completed every 5 years
this has to be completed by (i think sept 2013)

Ok cheers collie, that settles it, i'll only need it if i get sacked and couldn't get another job, in which case i'll be on the dole, and they might pay for that course for me anyhow, so i'm oot. Just for info collie, any idea how much the course teaching you to suck eggs is?

I agree Blue ... your younger than me and I certainly don't consider myself "to be getting on a bit"

Hi Bluefish
Have you taken in to account the need for CPC (certificate of professional competence)that all drivers must have by 2014 ?
A course of 7 modules must be taken between now and 2014.

its on a freebie from our company but we dont get paid for the time we put in but its from around 85 per 7 hr classroom the boys from brussels thought we could all learn something and they could top up their bonus'es I hear the french are going to ignore it but it is apparently a european thing and as i said it is compulsory to do this we as existing drivers get 5 years grace to complete but new drivers have to complete before they gain their licence from my understanding there is no exam for us "oldies" we just have to be there for 7 hrs at a time and then wake up sign the form and go home
I was merrily vaping in the classroom with approval (felt like a naughty schoolboy) and made the smokers jealous

Wish I could have gotten away with being just one of the old boys when I had my recent training for 2079 refrigerant handling , a job I have been doing for around 20 years and because of new regulation theoretically I was working illegally , yet snot nosed apprentices who had the qualification where supposedly more qualified than me without any practical experience .. how the hell does that work

If you have Driver CPC by 'acquired rights'
Don't leave it too late
If you have 'acquired rights' you must do 35 hours of periodic training by: •9 September 2013 if you are a bus or coach driver •9 September 2014 if you are a lorry driver
If you are an existing professional driver, you will have gained valuable experience in your work. You will have 'acquired rights' for five years, meaning that you will be deemed to have Driver CPC. This applies to you if you are a: •bus or coach driver and got your vocational licence (D, D1, D+E and D1+E) before 10 September 2008 •lorry driver and got your vocational licence (C, C1, C+E and C1+E) before 10 September 2009
However, you must do 35 hours of periodic training by: •9 September 2013 if you are a bus or coach driver •9 September 2014 if you are a lorry driver
