Hmm, looks like I've set up a poor challenge here, since after googling for it, I can see that they are indeed sold as general purpose "telescopic magnetic pick up tools", and not merely for the purpose I was thinking of.

However, the question remains: in what context would you use it along with the tool pictured above?

Ok I get the internal diameter measuring for use with the bouls, but can't see why the magnet would be used?
