Ok I have just managed to get my desktop working again, was fine yesterday up till at least 1am this morn when i went to bed, came home from work about 5ish pm and turned it on, it came up with the users logos that you click on, i'm running vista btw anyhow clicked on my icon came up with the welcome message and the spinining circle meaning i'm busy go away, and that was about it, after mucho faff put it into safe mode did a system restore to yesterday, sorry did 2x full scans first nothing found, restored, took bloody ages and it was still being tempermental, deleted avast which i had only just put on their and it seems to be back to normal now, thank god, only took 4.5 hours, daughter in law, I only went on face fart and played a kids dvd for her kid, and that was because she couldn't figure out how to load a dvd into a PS3, i rest my case. Anyhow in a non related matter, i have noticed when doing scans that it scans files for Norton anti virus, now i deleted this donkeys years ago, but obviously there must still be a lot of files left, but non anywhere i can see, even if i put norton or symantec into the search it doesn't come up with any, any ideas peeps, cheers andy.

It could be the remaining files stored in the programme files area. Look through that for symantic it might be still stuff left there

Norton is nortorious for being hard to get rid of, but there is a 'Norton Removal Tool', you might google it to download to get rid of all traces of norton from your system.
I had trouble with Norton and with Mcafee, both just slowed my system up too much to be any use. Avast seems to be ok, although that little popup that tells me it is updating virus definitions, really bugs me.

Norton is very bad best way to get rid is to do a full install of windows, try the removal tool but if i remember right it can not get rid of it all.... If i was you just download windows antivirus its very good and its free better than norton or mcafee by far. windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials

Avast seems to be ok, although that little popup that tells me it is updating virus definitions, really bugs me. In the newer versions of Avast, you can turn those off from the preferences. Search the Avast help file for a better idea of how to configure that section of the program.

norton mcafee awful dropped them back when the ark was invented, I have used AVG again not great, i now use windows own version in all honesty, avira is okay but i found it slowed my pc down.. but generally if you can't find it by searching then head into your x86 program files folder, it will probably be sitting in there or use a tool to remove it, i have just got rid of norton of my missus new laptop as it's just a bloody spam festing memory hog.

hey, just a quick bit of advice, download a freeware program called IT pro remove 4, it is free for non-comercial use and is an easy quick cure rather than a slow and painful preventative measure, it is free and legal to download, usually you can get it from softpedia.com, I have used it for years, also it updates everyday and gives you easy control over your startup programs (programs which start with windows and cause a long delay before a pc is usable). Hope this helps somebody.

Haha, think i've done it, found old files in the program data file 15 mb for norton and symantic in 3 folders, deleted. couldn't do the removal tool storm as i didn't know the key or which version had been installed, any how hopefully it's gone forever now.
