I don't carry on burning long after I see the red glow cos I worried about the same thing, but then the wicks are usually wet so it's never been a problem for me, I don't know how well just trying a few drops will work on a clearomiser in a vape, they need to be pretty soaked in liquid I would have thought, otherwise you will get a dryish hit, but I dont know I stopped after two little red glows I meant priming the wick with juice prior to the fill, in the hope it will wick quicker and better and faster etc. Still need to find out whether or not this one leaks yet, otherwise it's an awful waste, but at least I got my red glow thank you

If it's a short wick clearo it will wick almost immediately anyway. The problem with dripping onto the coil is that you could get juice down the centre tube and onto the battery connectors

Time to clean/dry burn a clearo is when the draw becomes really tight and you get very little vapour. Time to throw away/re-wick/recoil from the wick/coil point of view is when the wicks start falling apart or the wick stops wicking.
You dry burn till you get white ash and then coils start to glow red. Wash the ash off with hot water and reuse. The wicks are silica/glass fibre and will not char or burn. They are usually rated to withstand temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees centigrade..
Some people clean and dry burn weekly and those who can, change wicks and coils weekly. There is no harm in priming the wick by dripping a couple of drops directly on the coil to test. Does not make it better or worse.
