The warranty isnt so much a problem
The shop will give you a year, if it packs up after this time, and it wasnt your fault, and it is fair that the item should have worked longer you can ask for it to be replaced or fixed, i know several people who have done it in the padt and got itfixed or replaced You get that with any electrical item you buy. Ok youwill haveto send it of for repair which couldtake 4 weeks but atleast it will get fixed, just got a microwave back that stopped working after 2 years

I'm not up-to-date with 15" i3 laptops, but that looks brilliant even @ £300, Chrissie This may seem a strange question, it's to do with my 24/7 recording: When you slowly close the lid, at what point does the display switch off? I obviously can't leave the lid open and lit up at night, or even open and not lit up because I fling myself around whilst asleep so could knock it over. My oldish Asus switches off when the lid is still open by 2-3 inches, which means (I reckon) it's less likely to overheat while it's recording overnight than one which has to have the lid totally closed before the display switches off. You see, a screen recorder keeps recording even when the display is switched off, a miracle I discovered some time ago Hope that doesn't sound double-dutch ???

Scylla, There should be an option to control what the lid switch does on your laptop. On the toshiba I'm on at the moment you ckick on the battery Icon in the taskbar and up pops the power options on the left hand side there is an option to choose what the laptop does when you close the lid. Or You could set your screensaver to go blank after your set time switching off the display. Hope this helps.

if you go to 'control panel' and the 'power options' you should be able to change the options there

I've already got power options set to "do nothing" when I close the lid, but I need to leave the lid open to allow heat to escape from the keyboard area, so I want the display switched off but still working so that the screen recorder keeps recording. The Asus's lid switches off the screen at 2" or so but the display is still working invisibly so the screen recorder keeps going. The lid-hinge is quite stiff so the lid isn't easily accidentally closed. My M11X's lid doesn't behave like that, the display stays on until the lid is closed completely - it may even keep going then for all I know. I want to be able to have the lid open with black screen but the display still working. I don't understand the difference between display and screen ??? If I am unclear and repeating myself unduly, please forgive, am in a bad place

That works to turn off the screen, thank you Macca, but it comes back on again if there's the slightest movement of the laptop or the mouse ???

Many lappy manufacturers do not have the Fn+F5 key sequence to turn off the monitor and use optical sensors to detect that the lid is closed. The older or cheaper alternative is a microswitch located near the hinge, which is probably what you ASUS had and that's why it switches off when you close the lid.
Any software based solutions will wake on mouse click or movement..
You could contact Dell and ask their service department if there is a hidden sequence of buttons you could press to turn it off and turn it back on.
